Very short version: The edge lord son of another idiot dork who have both saved history from destruction as members of the Time Patrol.
At length:
Pre-Game
The grandson of notorious space marauder Mallusc, a Super Namekian banished from his home planet due to his violent mutation, Mellophone was born from this father Saxaphone shortly after he prevented the total destruction of history by Demon God Demigra. Whilst prior to this, Saxaphone had been fearful of having children, after experiencing the oblivion of all history, he decided to ensure he passed something on to the future.
Mellophone, usually shortened to Mello, was born without any of the purposeful influence his own father had given to his development. Whilst Mallusc, in his last-minute decision to turn to goodness, has created Saxaphone with purposefully repressed wicked tendencies and a penchant for protection Mello was a completely natural child. As a result, he came out much closer to the typical Super Namekian- an overtly violent individual with a leaning towards misusing his power. Saxaphone did his best to raise him to believe in justice and kindness, but Mello was more interested in obtaining further strength. Saxaphone respected his child's wishes to be his own person but before they parted ways he revealed a hint of his own darkness by defeating him in a vicious one-sided battle, informing Mello that he would perform justice against his own son if he were to be evil.
This moment was most profound to Mello, as with his demonic leanings, he considered that incredibly tough love to be the purest form a Super Namekian could have. Despite this, he refused to acknowledge respect for his father and vowed to surpass him.
Leaving New Namek to travel space and seek strength, Mello had a bit more of his father in him than he suspected and whilst he had intended to be a pirate or tyrant, he instead became a brutal vigilante, but always ready with an excuse for why he only ever seemed to battle the bad guys.
Eventually, as a late teenager, he felt he had reached the limits of his development in the relatively peaceful era and made the decision to join the Time Patrol as his father had- again with an excuse that it would allow him to encounter more powerful foes. He did so under the pseudonym Mant (after the 'mantel' of a slug's anatomy) as he did not wish for his father to know he was there. Having grown up a lot since they last saw each other, he was not recognised.
In game
Boy did that whole 'I wanna fight powerful guys' thing work out for him. Working his way up from Raditz to Beerus.
In the process, his father's past as a Time Patroller was briefly erased from time by the evil works of Time Breaker Towa. Due to being in an era outside of time when it occurred, Mello did not cease to exist but did forget his father and with it his motivations. The hollow feeling this gave him horrified Mello- when he rescued his father, he revealed his identity and they reconciled as father and son but also as rivals.
Personality
Mello is something of a twist on his father, who is a warm and gentle person who has an accidental aura of villainous intent. Mello, on the other hand is genuinely quite vicious and sadistic but embraces that side of himself- while consistently using it for good. He enjoys the thrill of grinding his foes into the dirt but finds the only acceptable targets of his wrath to be those with evil hearts. He self-styles himself as a 'Demon of Justice' and will often have an excuse for why he does anything nice. In general, he's a big ol' edgelord with morbid turns of phrase, but who will not admit he likes hanging out with people and having fun as much as he does breaking faces.
Despite this, he truly has a soft heart under it all. He finds it hard to turn people in need down, even if it requires mental gymnastics for him to find a way to reconcile it with his devilish attitude. He is very difficult to fluster and delivers these excuses in the usual cold tone he uses.
Mello is fiercely independent and hates relying on anyone else. It's the highest sign of respect from him if he asks for help. He tends to come across as aloof and disinterested for the most part. The only exception to this is when he has a chance to learn from someone- at which point he becomes a dutiful student and allows rays of excitement to shine through. Though he usually comes across as overly confident, it's covering for his insecurities- specifically, that he won't be able to match up to the escapades of his father. Especially the bombastically exaggerated tales of them told to him in his youth.
Though a cunning and wily warrior with an elegant, intelligent battle sense, he is comically naive outside of battle. He's probably the only person in the universe to always fall for his father's embellishments and possibly, possibly, thinks Mr Satan is genuinely incredibly powerful.
Appearence
Mello is tall even for a Namekian, and is around 7'8 with an athletic build. He usually wears baggy black clothing like his battle suit (pictured above) or his causal tracksuit with demon emblazed on the back.
Speak your wish… I shall grant you any single wish you have.
Before Mellophone was born, those words set his father on a path of incredible growth and self-discovery. A wish started it all, and Mello has heard the story over and over. How his father was pulled away from a planet where he had reached his limits to become the hero of time. Experiencing the destruction of all history and pulling it back from the brink was precisely what led to Mello's birth- his father wanted to leave something for the future.
Mello's own journey through time had involved his father being erased from history, and though Mello survived the experience, the emptiness of a life without him left a hollow feeling he couldn't shake even after Saxaphone was restored.
He needed to go on his own journey, and merely wandering space had already failed to fulfil him. So he took it back to what started it all.
"Dragon… I wish for a challenge only I can complete!" He makes his wish, in the shadow of the enormous dragon. The iconic 'vweeeen' sound and a glow of its red eyes was all it took. Mello vanished- unbeknownst to him, in another dimension, the answer to Mello's wish is the same as another great being. For a servant to complete an epic quest! The one making the call had simply specified a brutal fighter who wouldn't let cruelty get in the way.
Unfortunately, the intended servant will need to be forced and Mello is just kind of along for the ride.
He appears at the exact same moment as Mary. The endless maze around them radiates danger, despite nothing immediately overtly threatening happening right now. The summoning circle on the stone floor was intended for one, making for a less than elegant start to their quest. Shoving a 7'8 grumpy green giant into the same space as a human(ish) woman results in him crashing on top of her.
Meanwhile, an omnipresent voice, the god doing the conjuring, makes a less than impressive start too-
"Uh. I was… expecting one?
